Context and Setting: Northfield High School was my second placement and was a difficult adjustment for me, as elementary students are naturally so friendly and high school students are a little more closed off, at least at first. It is an IB school in a new suburb of Denver and is part of Denver Public Schools. The student population is diverse- some students have a lot of money and some students live in the low income housing surrounding the school. The student body is made up of many different races, genders, sexual identities, and ethnicities . After several weeks at the school, I began to understand the individual students and their age group more. My mentor teacher, Dustin Harper, invited me to be authentic with the students and this is where i gained the most success. Dust is extremely committed to relationship building- she truly takes care of her students. The school was in a hybrid situation at the time, so most of my students were at home and some were in the classroom with me. I'm proud to say that I was able to connect with both groups of students after following Dusty's lead and just being myself.
