Context and Setting: Columbian Elementary School is one of the oldest schools in Denver Public Schools and is located in the newly gentrified area of Denver called the Highlands. Most of my students were hispanic and and many were from low income families, so because the area surrounding the school is so expensive, a lot of my students were commuting to school from very far away. They chose to do this because tradition is important to them. It was almost daily that you would hear a child say, "my mom went to school here!" Students were excited to go to school where their parents and grandparents had gone to school years before, and many of the teachers in the school taught several generations of one family. This truly made the school feel like a family. My mentor teacher, Natalie Mauritz, was a big part of this family and worked incredibly hard for the kids. Unfortunately, due to COVID, the entirety of this student teaching experience was online. Students were at school in their classrooms, but specials teachers were asked to stay home and teach remotely. Despite this, I still feel like I became part of the Columbian family and developed meaningful relationships with my students and mentor teacher.
