3/29/2021- quite the change
The past few weeks I have moved on to my secondary placement at a high school called Northfield. It has been a challenge adjusting to high school students after working with elementary students at my first placement. The students are much more quiet, and because most of them are virtual, it is difficult to engage with them. I usually only have between one and five students physically in the room. It is difficult to form those personal connections with the students who are online, which I know is so important. I spent a lot of time the first few weeks thinking of creative ways to do so, which included fun attendance questions and one on one break out rooms. I prepared my lesson plan to include time for this.
For me personally, this new placement has really opened up my eyes to the pros and cons of teaching an older age group. I realize now that it is so exciting to dive deep into the content with them and have adult conversations, even if it is challenging to get them engaged at first. I want to keep spending time going deeper into the content and getting to know the students.
As a future art teacher, I am actually open to teaching in a high school now. Before, I thought I only wanted to teach elementary. This is an exciting revelation! I will apply to both and see where life takes me. I am thankful for my student teaching experience opening my eyes to a new opportunity.
For mFore personally,
